PHILADELPHIA- On May 25, 2023, At-Large Councilmember Jim Harrity (D) introduced a resolution on behalf of himself and first District, Councilmember Mark Squilla (D), recognizing a Mural Arts Philadelphia, Porch Light five-part series in partnership with the Mayor\u2019s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs and the Managing Director\u2019s Office. of AAPI murals celebrating the contributions, experiences, adaptability, and hope for the future of AAPI community.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u5728\u5e02\u8bae\u4f1a\u516c\u5f00\u8bc4\u8bba\u73af\u8282\u4e2d\uff0c\u6570\u4f4dAAPI\u793e\u533a\u6210\u5458\u53d1\u8868\u4e86\u8bb2\u8bdd\uff0c\u8868\u793a\u652f\u6301\u8fd9\u4e9b\u58c1\u753b\uff0c\u5e76\u5c06\u5b83\u4eec\u79f0\u4f5c\u4e00\u4e2a\u53ef\u4ee5\u5c55\u73b0\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u4e30\u5bcc\u6587\u5316\u5386\u53f2\u7684\u673a\u4f1a\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c06\u5176\u6bd4\u4f5c\u5efa\u7acb\u793e\u533a\u95f4\u5bf9\u8bdd\u3001\u4fe1\u4efb\u548c\u4fc3\u8fdb\u76f8\u4e92\u7406\u89e3\u7684\u50ac\u5316\u5242\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Several members of the AAPI community spoke out in support of the Murals during the public comment portion of the City Council meeting, describing them as an opportunity not only to highlight Chinatown\u2019s rich cultural history but as a catalyst for building dialogue, trust and understanding between communities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

\u201cThanks to the partnership of Jane Golden and the Porch Light Program staff, we were able to lay out a plan that not only replaced the most visible and well-known mural in Chinatown but added four additional murals in multiple Philadelphia neighborhoods that give voice to the growing presence of Asian and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander individuals, families, organizations and businesses throughout our city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u8fd9\u4e2a\u7cfb\u5217\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u548c\u7b2c\u4e8c\u5e45\u58c1\u753b\u5df2\u7ecf\u5b8c\u6210\uff1b\u7b2c\u4e09\u5e45\u8ba1\u5212\u5728\u4eca\u5e74\u5b8c\u6210\uff0c\u5730\u70b9\u4f4d\u4e8e\u8d39\u57ce\u897f\u5317\u90e8\u7684\u5965\u5c14\u5c3c\u533a\uff08Olney Section\uff09\u3002\u6700\u540e\u4e24\u5e45\u8ba1\u5212\u57282024\u5e74\u5b8c\u6210\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The first two murals in the five-part series are already painted; the Third is planned for this year in the Olney Section of Philadelphia in the North West. The last two are scheduled for 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first mural is tucked away in a middle-class neighborhood off the Tasker-Morris subway stop in South Philly, on an Indonesian Restaurant called Hardena which everyone in the community raved about, including a little old Filipino lady who told me to call her Lola (roughly translated as Grandma), who spent nearly 15 minutes talking about her favorite dishes and how proud she was of the Widjojo family for their success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Second Mural is located on the second story of Vietnam Restaurant at 221 N. 11th Street and was dedicated on May 10, 2023. We Dreamt an Orchard this way by Gina Kim tells the story of the hard work it takes to build community through an AAPI perspective, but it also gives the viewer permission to be playful and enjoy life as part of that process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third in the series will be in the Olney neighborhood in NW Philly on Fern Rock Hardware Store at 5957 N. 5th Street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
It will focus on the solidarity between the Asian and Black communities. These two communities have struggled with White Supremacist gaslighting via immigration and economic policies that have historically pitted these communities against one another, cloaking the White Supremacist goal of suppressing both communities by pushing a narrative of Black-Asian hostility.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

White supremacy created the structures of oppression seen in poor black, brown, and AAPI communities; it built and fostered the myth of the model minority, just like Christian Nationalism, an offshoot of White Supremacy that drove the xenophobic and racist views around COVID-19, this mural will combat this gaslighting by focusing on the solidarity these communities have shared through the generations.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
