These establishments cater to the everyday needs of the Chinese and Asian communities. In this article of ‘Community Voices,’ we will engage in conversations with four Chinese small business owners who are making their mark in Philadelphia\u2019s Chinatown. They’ll share their stories, offering local perspectives on survival and growth in Chinatown.<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

\u8bb8\u65fb\u533b\u751f\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u6b64\u6b21\u91c7\u8bbf\u4e2d\u552f\u4e00\u4e00\u4f4d\u5973\u6027\u3002\u5979\u7684\u77e5\u6027\uff0c\u6e29\u5a49\uff0c\u5e72\u7ec3\u548c\u4e13\u4e1a\uff0c\u662f\u5f88\u591a\u5973\u4f01\u4e1a\u5bb6\u7684\u7f29\u5f71\u3002\u5f53\u5e74\u4f34\u7740\u201c\u51fa\u56fd\u6f6e\u201d\u6765\u5230\u7f8e\u56fd\u7684\u5979\uff0c\u5bf9\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u672a\u6765\u5e76\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u660e\u786e\u7684\u89c4\u5212\u30022014\u5e74\uff0c\u5979\u63a5\u624b\u4e86\u4f4d\u4e8e\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u7684\u534e\u590f\u773c\u79d1\u8bca\u6240\uff0c\u5230\u73b0\u5728\uff0c\u5979\u5df2\u7ecf\u4e3a\u8d39\u57ce\u534e\u4eba\u793e\u7fa4\u670d\u52a1\u4e86\u5feb10\u5e74\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Dr. Xu Min is the only woman among those we interviewed in this article. Her intellect, grace, efficiency, and professionalism epitomize the many female entrepreneurs striving for a successful business in Philadelphia Chinatown. When she came to the United States during the wave of immigration, she didn’t have a specific plan for her future. In 2014, she took over \u201cCentral City Eyecare\u201d located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. Since then, she has been serving the Chinese community in Philadelphia for nearly 10 years.<\/span>\"\u8bb8\u65fb\"<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

\u201c\u6211\u73b0\u5728\u8fd8\u8bb0\u5f97\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u6765\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\uff0c\u662f\u57282005\u5e74\u3002\u6211\u5f53\u65f6\u89c9\u5f97\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u5f88\u5927\uff0c\u611f\u89c9\u6bd4\u534e\u76db\u987f\u7684\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u8fd8\u8981\u66f4\u5927\u4e00\u4e9b\u3002\u6211\u53d1\u73b0\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u91cc\u7adf\u7136\u6709\u4e2d\u6587\u4e66\u5e97\uff0c\u9910\u9986\u4e5f\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u7684\u9009\u62e9\u3002\u611f\u89c9\u592a\u4eb2\u5207\u4e86\u3002\u201d\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u7ed9\u8bb8\u65fb\u7559\u4e0b\u7684\u7f8e\u597d\u521d\u5370\u8c61\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u5979\u540e\u6765\u51b3\u5b9a\u5728\u8fd9\u91cc\u5b89\u5bb6\u7acb\u4e1a\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u539f\u56e0\u3002<\/section>\n

\u201cI still remember my first visit to Philadelphia’s Chinatown, it was in 2005. I felt that Philadelphia’s Chinatown was quite extensive, even larger than Washington DC’s Chinatown. I was surprised to find Chinese \u00a0bookstores and a wide variety of restaurants here in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. It felt so familiar and welcoming.\u201d This initial wonderful impression Dr. Min Xu had became one of the most significant reasons that she later decided to settle and establish herself here.<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u201c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5e74\u6211\u80fd\u770b\u5230\u8d39\u57ce\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u7684\u53d8\u5316\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\u6700\u8fd1\u5f00\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u5976\u8336\u5e97\uff0c\u4e0d\u540c\u53e3\u5473\u7684\u9910\u9986\u4e5f\u8d8a\u6765\u8d8a\u591a\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5f88\u53ef\u60dc\uff0c\u6211\u771f\u6ca1\u6709\u592a\u591a\u7684\u65f6\u95f4\u53bb\u901b\u3002\u201d\u6bcf\u5468\u4e8c\u5230\u6bcf\u5468\u516d\uff0c\u8bb8\u65fb\u90fd\u4f1a\u5728\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u7684\u8bca\u6240\u51fa\u8bca\uff0c90%\u7684\u75c5\u4eba\u90fd\u662f\u534e\u4eba\u3002<\/section>\n

\u201cI’ve seen changes in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, like the recent increase in bubble tea shops and the growing variety of restaurants with different flavors. Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to explore.\u201d From Tuesday to Saturday, Dr. Xu practices at the clinic in Chinatown, where 90% of the patients are Chinese.<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u56e0\u4e3a\u592a\u5fd9\uff0c\u8bb8\u533b\u751f\u4e00\u6574\u5929\u90fd\u624e\u5728\u8bca\u5ba4\u4e2d\uff0c\u4e2d\u5348\u4e5f\u4e0d\u4f11\u606f\u3002\u201c\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u5ba2\u4eba\u6709\u4f4f\u5728\u5510\u4eba\u8857\u7684\uff0c\u8fd8\u6709\u4ece\u4e1c\u5317\u533a\u8fc7\u6765\u7684\uff0c\u8d39\u57ce\u8fdc\u90ca\u4e5f\u6709\u3002\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u89c9\u5f97\u5982\u679c\u4e0d\u80fd\u7528\u4e2d\u6587\u4ea4\u6d41\u597d\u50cf\u9694\u4e86\u4e00\u5c42\uff0c\u54ea\u6015\u6709\u7ffb\u8bd1\u6216\u8005\u6709\u5b50\u5973\u966a\u7740\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u5f88\u591a\u534e\u4eba\u5b81\u53ef\u8dd1\u66f4\u8fdc\u7684\u8def\u4e5f\u613f\u610f\u8fc7\u6765\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u89c9\u5f97\u6211\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u4e3a\u4ed6\u4eec\u89e3\u91ca\u5f97\u66f4\u52a0\u6e05\u695a\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Xu is so busy that she spends the whole day in the consultation room without taking a break at lunchtime. \u201cOur patients come from Chinatown, some from the Northeast area, and even from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Many patients feel that if they can’t communicate in Chinese, language barrier is always a problem, even with translators or accompanied by their children. Many Chinese patients prefer to travel further because they believe we can explain things more clearly.\u201d<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u6bcf\u5929\u9762\u5bf9\u773c\u775b\u51fa\u4e86\u95ee\u9898\u6765\u5411\u5979\u6c42\u52a9\u7684\u75c5\u4eba\uff0c\u539f\u672c\u6e29\u67d4\u548c\u7ec6\u81f4\u7684\u8bb8\u65fb\u53d8\u5f97\u66f4\u52a0\u6709\u8010\u5fc3\uff0c\u751a\u81f3\u662f\u4f5b\u7cfb\u4e86\u3002\u201c\u4e3a\u793e\u533a\u670d\u52a1\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u8981\u6709\u8010\u5fc3\u3002\u7279\u522b\u662f\u4e00\u4e9b\u8001\u5e74\u4eba\uff0c\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u90fd\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u81ea\u5df1\u773c\u775b\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u72b6\u51b5\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u6709\u5404\u79cd\u7126\u8651\u548c\u5065\u5fd8\u3002\u5982\u6bd4\u8001\u4eba\u5bb6\u6765\u914d\u773c\u955c\uff0c\u914d\u597d\u4e86\u4ee5\u540e\uff0c\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u8bf4\u955c\u6846\u4e0d\u662f\u81ea\u5df1\u6311\u7684\u90a3\u4e00\u4e2a\u3002\u5728\u8fd9\u79cd\u60c5\u51b5\u4e0b\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u4f1a\u8ba9\u4ed6\u4eec\u62cd\u4e00\u5f20\u7167\u7247\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u8001\u4eba\u770b\u7740\u7167\u7247\u4e5f\u8bf4\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u7ed9\u4ed6\u4eec\u6362\u955c\u6846\u4e86\uff0c\u53d1\u751f\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u6b21\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u53ea\u80fd\u662f\u8010\u5fc3\uff0c\u518d\u8010\u5fc3\u3002\u6211\u7406\u89e3\u8fd9\u4e9b\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u81ea\u5df1\u4e5f\u6709\u53d8\u8001\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u3002\u201d<\/section>\n

As she assists patients seeking help for eye problems every day, Dr. Xu, naturally gentle and meticulous, has become even more patient, almost Zen-like. \u201cWhen serving the community, patience is essential. Especially with the elderly, many of them are unaware of their eye conditions or suffer from various anxieties and forgetfulness. For instance, when fitting glasses for older individuals, even after we’ve completed the fitting, many claim that the frame isn’t the one they chose. In such cases, we ask them to take a photo, but often, even after looking at the photo, they insist we changed their glasses. It happens a lot, and all we can do is be patient\u2014patient and patient. I understand these situations, because everyone will be a senior someday.\u201d<\/span>\"\"<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

“Sometimes, it’s a very simple issue they’re unaware of, and I solve significant problems with straightforward methods. Sometimes, it might just be needing a pair of glasses. This brings me a lot of satisfaction and happiness.” Although being a small business owner inevitably involves dealing with accounts, taxes, staff, and profits, Dr. Xu prefers her role as an ophthalmologist.<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Looking back on these years in the States, Dr. Xu’s expression has become solemn. In comparison to her dedication, she feels she has gained much more. \u201cOver 20 years ago when I left China, it was a time when China was rapidly developing. Someone says, ‘You missed the chance to get rich in China.’ However, I don’t agree with that. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the Chinese community, because I received a higher medical education. Previously, I didn’t have the chance to give back to the community. Personally, my personal growth has far exceeded the expectations and imaginations of my youth; I have become a better version of myself.'”<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Sang Kee’s roast duck is famously delicious, and our conversation started from there. 43 years ago, in 1980, Mr. Michael Chow opened the first roast duck restaurant in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, naming it \u201cSang Kee\u201d. Mr. Chow recalls what the restaurant looked like, which today leaves a deep impression due to its size. \u201cAt the beginning, it was very small, extremely small, with only 20 chairs. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote an article describing our restaurant as \u2018a hole in the wall\u2019. They even mentioned, \u2018We won’t give the address because this restaurant in Chinatown is too small, and we don’t want people going there and not finding a place to sit.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

They said I had two job options: first, working in a garment factory, and second, working in a restaurant doing various tasks like serving tables, cooking, or washing dishes. There were jobs available; it depended on what you could do.\u201d<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

After he came to the United States, Michael Chow relied on his keen business insight and decided to open a roast duck shop in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. \u201cAt that time in Philadelphia, if you wanted to eat roast duck, there was only one option: a truck came down from New York every Saturday, bringing vegetables and beloved Chinese dishes like roast duck, roast pig, and BBQ pork. There weren’t many Chinese supermarkets here. To have these dishes, they had to be transported from New York, which was very inconvenient.\u201d<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Guests who love his roast duck are pleasantly surprised to discover that Sang Kee has not only expanded to a larger storefront next to the original location but also opened branches in University City and the suburbs of Philadelphia. Tourists can come and take photos. From Panda Park to the archway of Chinatown, we could design it as \u201cPanda Avenue\u201d, where people could stroll through Chinatown along this route. \u201cOur store opened on March 23, 1997. At that time, there were already many Chinese herbs shops in Chinatown. However, it was my first time opening a store here, which came with some challenges. For instance, initially, we didn’t know where to purchase inventory, and we didn’t have much savings. I had to go to New York to buy goods, and they were quite expensive because I didn’t know where the wholesale companies were located.\u201d<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

In 1981, Mr. Kieng Sieu Lim and his wife, along with their two children, fled from Cambodia to the United States. Like many newcomers, the Lim family faced tremendous hardship and difficulties. Mr. Lim began by washing dishes and doing odd jobs in restaurants. Later, he started his own Chinese take-out in a rough neighborhood in Philadelphia to make a living. “That area had a lot of drug dealing and homeless people; it was very frightening. We lived in constant fear. Over 13 years, we opened four different stores, but I felt life had no meaning. I still wanted to open a Chinese medicinal herb shop.”<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

When it comes to traditional Chinese medicine and herbs, Kieng Sieu Lim is eager to share. When he was 13 years old, he traveled with his parents from China to Cambodia. His parents ran a medicinal herb shop where many of the medicines were processed in-house. After wandering in the United States for over a decade, Kieng Sieu Lim decided to return to his roots and opened a traditional Chinese herb medicine store, in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. “Most of Long Life Chinese Herbs’ customers are Chinese. If a customer brings a prescription, we typically have most of the Chinese herbs they’re looking for. If someone comes in for treatment, we use traditional Chinese medicine methods to \u2018diagnose\u2019 and then prepare the necessary herbs. Nowadays, many medicines come in the form of concentrated granules, which are convenient to take and have the same efficacy as traditional methods.”<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Kenny noticed that compared to New York, Philadelphia had a much more limited selection of phones. “The phones available in Philadelphia were quite different from those in New York City. If Chinatown’s small Chinese businesses don’t know how to do business with ‘outsiders,’ existing small businesses will be significantly affected, possibly even disappearing slowly. I think everyone should be prepared early and not wait for all of this to happen before taking action.”<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

In the years of working hard in Chinatown, figuring out how to conduct business for “locals” has always been Kenny’s concern. For instance, he sees Philadelphia’s annual “Restaurant Week” as a great idea worth emulating. \u201cDuring this event, restaurants of various cuisines unite to offer discounts and meal packages, attracting a lot of attention. I think a similar event could be organized in Chinatown, perhaps offering discounted packages comprising cocktails, appetizers, and main courses.\u201d His point is that sometimes it’s important for everyone to do something together.<\/span><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
