When a friend asks me who they should vote for President this November I say without a doubt, Kamala Harris. This is not because she is half Asian American and has recent immigrant roots as many of us do. I am a third generation American whose grandparents were fortunate to immigrate here from Taishan in Guangdong Province, China. While her personal struggles and understanding of what it\u2019s like to be an Asian American person of color in America give her an important perspective that connects us, it is the sharp contrast in policies and approach to communities like ours that makes her really the only choice in this binary election.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Let\u2019s start with how Chinese and Asian Americans have been seen as \u201cothers\u201d in America since we arrived. For those unfamiliar with our history in America, there was the Chinese Exclusion Act that was intended to just allow Chinese to work building the transcontinental railroad, but not raise families and communities here because Chinese were seen as perpetual foreigners and not like other Americans. Angel Island in San Francisco stands as a testament to the detainment of Chinese trying to come here for a better life, while Ellis Island was the East Coast example of an \u201copen border\u201d that welcomed Europeans with open arms. The Exclusion Act lasted for 61 years, only to be repealed when the US needed China as an ally in WWII against Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u4ee4\u4eba\u60b2\u54c0\u7684\u662f\u9488\u5bf9\u4e9a\u88d4\u7684\u53cc\u6807\u64cd\u4f5c\u4ecd\u672a\u505c\u6b62\uff0c\u7f8e\u56fd\u968f\u540e\u8bbe\u7acb\u4e86\u62d8\u7559\u8425\uff0c\u76d1\u7981\u4e86\u5927\u91cf\u65e5\u672c\u4eba\u548c\u65e5\u672c\u88d4\u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\uff0c\u800c\u5bf9\u5fb7\u56fd\u88d4\u7eb3\u7cb9\u515a\u5374\u51e0\u4e4e\u65e0\u6240\u4f5c\u4e3a\u3002\u6211\u7684\u7236\u4eb2\u66fe\u548c\u8bb8\u591a\u534e\u88d4\u548c\u4e9a\u88d4\u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\u4e00\u9053\uff0c\u52c7\u6562\u5730\u4e3a\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u56fd\u5bb6\u670d\u5f79\uff0c\u4ed6\u8fd8\u5728\u8bfa\u66fc\u5e95\u767b\u9646\u6218\u5f79\u4e2d\uff0c\u53c2\u52a0\u4e86D-Day\u540e\u7684\u521d\u6b21\u8fdb\u653b\u30022021\u5e7411\u6708\uff0c\u7236\u4eb2\u5728\u5149\u8363\u9000\u5f7975\u5e74\u540e\u7ec8\u4e8e\u83b7\u5f97\u4e86\u4e00\u679a\u5956\u7ae0\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u90fd\u4e3a\u4ed6\u611f\u5230\u81ea\u8c6a\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Sadly, the US then set up Internment or Concentration Camps imprisoning the Japanese and Japanese American population of the United States, but did little about the German American Nazi Party. My father, along with many other brave Chinese and Asian Americans, served our country bravely, landing at Normandy just after the initial invasion on D-Day. We were proud that he finally received a medal for his service in November of 2021, 75 years after his honorable discharge from the Army.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u6211\u662f\u5728\u7f8e\u56fd\u957f\u5927\u7684\u7b2c\u4e09\u4ee3\u534e\u88d4\uff0c\u7ecf\u5e38\u6709\u4eba\u95ee\u6211\u6765\u81ea\u54ea\u91cc\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u6211\u7684\u957f\u76f8\u770b\u8d77\u6765\u5e76\u4e0d\u50cf\u571f\u751f\u571f\u957f\u7684\u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\u3002\u6b63\u56e0\u4e3a\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u5f53\u542c\u5230\u7279\u6717\u666e\u8c08\u8bba\u201c\u79fb\u6c11\u201d\u6076\u6027\u72af\u7f6a\u8bdd\u9898\u65f6\uff0c\u6211\u611f\u5230\u5341\u5206\u4e0d\u5b89\u3002\u4ed6\u5c06\u76ee\u524d\u6d8c\u5165\u7f8e\u56fd\u7684\u62c9\u4e01\u88d4\u3001\u534e\u88d4\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u4eba\u90fd\u89c6\u4e3a\u201c\u5916\u6765\u8005\u201d\uff0c\u62c9\u4e01\u88d4\u5927\u591a\u4fe1\u5949\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0c\u7279\u6717\u666e\u4e5f\u4ecd\u7136\u4e0d\u559c\u6b22\u4ed6\u4eec\u3002\u540c\u6837\u662f\u96be\u6c11\uff0c\u4ed6\u5374\u6ca1\u6709\u62b1\u6028\u4e4c\u514b\u5170\u96be\u6c11\uff0c\u53cd\u800c\u8d2c\u4f4e\u6d77\u5730\u96be\u6c11\u3002\u53ef\u4ee5\u770b\u51fa\u5728\u7279\u6717\u666e\u7684\u5f15\u5bfc\u4e0b\uff0c\u7f8e\u56fd\u793e\u4f1a\u5145\u65a5\u7740\u767d\u4eba\u81f3\u4e0a\u4e3b\u4e49\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Even growing up as a third generation American I still have people ask me where I\u2019m from because people that look like me aren\u2019t supposed to be from here. It is with this in mind that I cringe when I hear Donald Trump talking about \u201cmigrant\u201d murderers and rapists as he \u201cothers\u201d the current influx of Latinos, Chinese and others coming across the Southern border.\u00a0 Even though the Latinos are largely Christian he still dislikes them. We cannot help but see that race and the idea of White supremacy is a big part of the reason (he hasn\u2019t complained about Ukrainian refugees while he denigrates Haitian refugees).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
\u4e0d\u4ec5\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u7279\u6717\u666e\u8fd8\u7f16\u9020\u51fa\u79fb\u6c11\u5927\u591a\u6570\u662f\u7f6a\u72af\u7684\u8c0e\u8a00\u3002\u4e8b\u5b9e\u4e0a\uff0c\u5927\u591a\u6570\u79fb\u6c11\u6765\u8fd9\u91cc\u53ea\u662f\u4e3a\u4e86\u7ed9\u5bb6\u4eba\u4e89\u53d6\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u77e5\u9053\u88ab\u9a71\u9010\u51fa\u5883\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u5a01\u80c1\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u865a\u5047\u8a00\u8bba\u4e0d\u4ec5\u4ee4\u4eba\u75db\u5fc3\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u5341\u5206\u5371\u9669\u30022019\u5e74\u57c3\u5c14\u5e15\u7d22\u53d1\u751f\u4e86\u4e00\u8d77\u9a87\u4eba\u542c\u95fb\u7684\u5927\u89c4\u6a21\u67aa\u51fb\u4e8b\u4ef6\uff0c\u9020\u621023\u540d\u62c9\u4e01\u88d4\u88ab\u67aa\u6740\u3002\u8fd9\u8d77\u4e8b\u4ef6\u5c31\u88ab\u8ba4\u4e3a\u4e0e\u767d\u4eba\u81f3\u4e0a\u4e3b\u4e49\u548c\u957f\u671f\u6563\u64ad\u7684\u79fb\u6c11\u6050\u614c\u6709\u5173\u3002\u53ef\u4ee5\u8bf4\uff0c\u6b63\u662f\u7279\u6717\u666e\u717d\u52a8\u6c11\u4f17\u5bf9\u79fb\u6c11\u7684\u6050\u60e7\u548c\u6124\u6012\u5bfc\u81f4\u4e86\u8fd9\u4e9b\u884c\u4e3a\uff0c\u540c\u6837\u7684\u539f\u56e0\u4e5f\u5f15\u53d1\u4e862021\u5e741\u67086\u65e5\u56fd\u4f1a\u5c71\u9a9a\u4e71\u3002<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

And creating the false narrative that they are largely criminals is the exact opposite of what most immigrants know. The fact is that immigrants know that deportation is a threat and most are here to just try to make a better life for their families. These false statements are not just hurtful, they are dangerous. The 2019 mass shooting of 23 Latinos in El Paso is directly linked to White Supremacy and fear of others coming here to replace the white majority. The fear and anger that Trump stokes ties directly to these kinds of acts, just as they did to the Insurrection on January 6th.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is nothing new for Trump. Before he ran for President he questioned Obama\u2019s citizenship claiming that he, Trump, had proof that Obama was born overseas. Of course that was false and he never acknowledged his big lie, just as he\u2019s never acknowledged that he lost the 2020 election, and in fact lost the popular vote in the 2016 election as well by almost 2.9 Million votes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Now he is now questioning Kamala Harris\u2019 racial identity \u2013 he cannot seem to grasp that you can be more than one thing, since he doesn\u2019t have any people of color in his family. And he purposely mispronounces her name because it\u2019s \u201cforeign\u201d to him. Obama or Kamala could be one of us.\u00a0 And when Covid hit he thought it was funny to call it the China Virus or Kung Flu, blaming it on the Chinese. We were all impacted by these statements as Chinese and Asians were attacked all around the country, including here in Philadelphia. We know words matter especially when they come from the highest sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

In fact, our move to more renewable energy (something Trump often opposes) will continue to help ease inflation by decreasing the demand for oil, while addressing global warming (the world just recorded its hottest day in history and the larger hurricanes and storms are a sure sign of man-made climate change), which Trump calls a hoax! The Biden Harris team\u2019s push for renewable energy (and the jobs created) also makes total sense to those concerned about the future of our planet for our grandchildren. Interestingly, if you have a fixed rate mortgage, with inflation, as we see wages increase, your mortgage payments\u00a0stay the same, leaving you with more expendable income for other things.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Finally, a personal issue for me has been the lack of any common sense gun laws in our country because of the radical gun lobby. Some years ago my 11 year old nephew was shot and paralyzed from the neck down because his friend had easy access to an unlocked gun. Today, store owners and our communities live in fear of young people who should not have such easy access to guns, including assault rifles that were once banned until a Republican congress allowed the ban to expire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Trump says he\u2019s the NRA\u2019s man and we know that means no new common sense laws like background checks, red flag laws (gun removal from domestic abusers and others who threaten), banning high capacity magazines, mandatory gun locks, and re-allowing manufacturers to be liable for damages, just like any other industry, for the harm that is inflicted. Vice Presidential candidate Walz, an avid hunter, marksman and veteran gun owner agrees with these measures, so maybe there is a way to make progress, but not if we go back to Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
